development with a futuristic outlook

Since twenty years, the Montreal Gay and Lesbian Community Centre (CCGLM) has been working within the GLBT community while also being involved in its home neighbourhood - le Centre-Sud! In co-operation with its Mario-Racine Foundation, the CCGLM's involvement will take shape through the acquisition of a building accessible to all.

The CCGLM is a non-profit organisation founded on August 17, 1988, to improve the lives of those in its communities by promoting a dialogue of efforts and by stimulating both individuals and organisations to handle and sustain social and community development. As of June 7, 1990, the CCGLM is recognised as a charitable organistation by the appropriate legal authorities and, therby, bears the Canada Registered Charity Number: 13163 7050 RR0001.

Offered by the CCGLM and open to the public, the Open Book Library is one of the very few documentation centres on homosexuality in Canada and one of the largest in the French-speaking world. Established in 1991, the Library houses a collection of monographs (over 6 000 books) that either are written by gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, and transgender authors or deal with issues that affect our communities. Likewise, there are several thousand documents (articles, studies, theses, etc.) and periodicals (magazines, newspapers, bulletins) that round off the collection.

Although not a social services provider, nor a direct participant in health, in education or in the cultural sphere, we do support those who work in these sectors. The CCGLM plays an active part in many committees, with various partners, in order to represent its members and service users.

We actively participate in our neighbourhood's revitalisation projects with the Table pour l’aménagement du Centre-Sud and the Corporation de Développement Communautaire Centre-Sud (social housing, food security, neighbourhood safety). Through this collaboration with other area participants, the CCGLM has become a major partner for all social and community development projects in the area.

It is the CCGLM's duty to keep a sharp lookout for new social projects in order to assist groups and individuals in our communities to make progress in their rights as full-fledged citizens in society.
